Recently DRDO has developed advanced Chaff Technology to protect naval ships from missile attacks. The Indian Navy conducted a pilot test of the latest Chaff Technology from Indian naval ships in the Arabian Sea and found their performance satisfactory.
Major issues in Chaff Technology
- Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) has developed state-of-the-art chaff technology to protect naval ships from enemy missile strikes.
- Defense Laboratory Jodhpur (DLJ), the laboratory of DRDO, has developed three variants of this very important technology (state-of-the-art chaff technology) indigenously.
- The successful development of state-of-the-art chaff technology by Defense Laboratory Jodhpur is another step in the direction of ‘Self-reliant India’.

- In this way, DRDO has specialized in weapon manufacturing to protect against future threats from the enemy and has handed over the chaff technology to industries for large scale production.
What is Chaff Technology?
- Chaff is an electronic countermeasure technology that protects naval ships from enemy radars and radio-frequency missiles by taking counter-resistance operations.
- In chaff technology, rocket missiles deployed for deterrent action become active upon seeing the enemy’s missile coming towards the naval ships and destroy the enemy’s missile far away from the warship.
- Being able to track advanced chaff technology, radiofrequency, heat sense or infrared technology, it also destroys attacking missiles.
- This technology is so important that it has little to protect naval ships from enemy missile attacks. A large amount of chaff material is released into the air.
- The Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO), Jodhpur-based defence laboratory has developed three types of chaff technology indigenously – short-range fire rocket (SRCR), medium-range chaff rocket (MRCR) and long-range firearm. Capacity chaff rocket (LRCR).
Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO)
- Defense Research and Development Organization is the country’s leading organization for research related to defence of India.
- This organization functions as a subsidiary unit of the Indian Ministry of Defense.
- It was established in 1958 as the technical department of the Indian Army and Defense Science Institute.
- The institute currently has fifty-one laboratories that are engaged in research in the field of electronics, defence equipment, etc.

हाल ही में डीआरडीओ ने नौसैनिक पोतों को मिसाइल हमलों से बचाने के लिए आधुनिकतम चैफ़ प्रौद्योगिकी का विकास किया है। भारतीय नौसेना ने अरब सागर में भारतीय नौसैनिक पोतों से आधुनिकतम चैफ़ प्रौद्योगिकी का प्रायौगिक परीक्षण किया और इनके प्रदर्शन को संतोषजनक पाया है।
इससे जुड़े मुख्य तथ्य
- रक्षा अनुसंधान एवं विकास संगठन (डीआरडीओ) ने नौसैनिक पोतों को शत्रु के मिसाइल हमलें से बचाने के लिए आधुनिकतम चैफ़ प्रौद्योगिकी का विकास किया है।
- डीआरडीओ की प्रयोगशाला, रक्षा प्रयोगशाला जोधपुर (डीएलजे) ने इस अतिमहत्वपूर्ण प्रौद्योगिकी(आधुनिकतम चैफ़ प्रौद्योगिकी) के तीन प्रकारों का स्वदेश में विकास किया है।
- रक्षा प्रयोगशाला जोधपुर द्वारा आधुनिकतम चैफ़ प्रौद्योगिकी का सफल विकास ‘आत्मनिर्भर भारत’ की दिशा में एक अन्य कदम है।
- हाल में भारतीय नौसेना ने अरब सागर में भारतीय नौसैनिक पोतों से इन तीनों प्रकार के रॉकेटों का प्रायौगिक परीक्षण किया और इनके प्रदर्शन को संतोषजनक पाया है।
- इस प्रकार डीआरडीओ ने भविष्य में शत्रु से होने वाले खतरों से बचाव से हथियार निर्माण में विशेषज्ञता प्राप्त कर ली है तथा चैफ़ प्रौद्योगिकी को बड़ी मात्रा में उत्पादन के लिए उद्योगों को सौंप दिया है।
क्या होती है चैफ़ प्रौद्योगिकी?
- चैफ़ एक इलेक्ट्रॉनिक काउंटरमेजर टेक्नोलॉजी है जो जबाबी प्रतिरोधक कार्यवाई कर नौसैनिक पोतों को शत्रु के रडार और रेडियो फ्रीक्वेंसी मिसाइल से सुरक्षा प्रदान करता है।
- चाफ टेक्नोलॉजी में प्रतिरोधक कार्यवाई हेतु तैनात रॉकेट मिसाइल शत्रु के मिसाइल को नौसैनिक पोतों की ओर आते देख एक्टिव हो जाते है और शत्रु की मिसाइल को जंगी जहाज से काफी दूर ही नष्ट कर देते हैं।
- एडवांस्ड चाफ टेक्नोलॉजी, रेडियो फ्रिक्वेंसी, हीट सेंस या इंफ्रारेड टेक्नोलॉजी को ट्रैक में सक्षम होने के कारण यह हमला करने वाली मिसाइलों को भी ध्वस्त कर देता है
- यह प्रौद्योगिकी इसलिए महत्वपूर्ण है कि इसमें नौसैनिक पोतों को शत्रु के मिसाइल हमले से बचाने के लिए बहुत कम मात्रा में चैफ़ सामग्री को हवा में छोड़ा जाता है।
- रक्षा अनुसंधान एवं विकास संगठन (डीआरडीओ) की जोधपुर स्थित रक्षा प्रयोगशाला ने चैफ़ प्रौद्योगिकी के तीन प्रकारों का स्वदेश में विकास किया है- कम दूरी की मारक क्षमता वाला चैफ़ रॉकेट (एसआरसीआर), मध्यम रेंज चैफ़ रॉकेट (एमआरसीआर) और लम्बी दूरी की मारक क्षमता वाला चैफ़ रॉकेट (एलआरसीआर)।

- रक्षा अनुसंधान एवं विकास संगठन भारत की रक्षा से जुड़े अनुसंधान कार्यों के लिये देश की अग्रणी संस्था है।
- यह संगठन भारतीय रक्षा मंत्रालय की एक आनुषांगिक ईकाई के रूप में काम करता है।
- इसकी स्थापना 1958 में भारतीय थल सेना एवं रक्षा विज्ञान संस्थान के तकनीकी विभाग के रूप में की गयी थी।
- वर्तमान में संस्थान की अपनी इक्यावन प्रयोगशालाएँ हैं जो इलेक्ट्रॉनिक्स, रक्षा उपकरण इत्यादि के क्षेत्र में अनुसंधान में कार्यरत हैं।
