The Akash Missile is developing under the integrated guided-missile development program (IGMD). Akash is one of the greatest achievements of the IGMD program.

Integrated Missile Development Programme

The Integrated Guided Missile Development Program falls within the scope of the Ministry of Defense with the aim of creating a variety of guided missiles that provide stellar military power to India and also serve as a deterrent to our not-so-friendly neighbours, such as China and Pakistan.

Dr APJ Abdul Kalam, who work with the ISRO and was closely involved in the development of the Satellite Launch Vehicle, SLV-3, was inducted into the IGMD programme in 1980. Because of the success achieved by India in the guided missile development programme under his stewardship, he came to be known as the ’Missile Man of India’.

The program began in 1980 and ended in 2008, when the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) formally announced on 8 January 2008 that the strategically integrated guided missile program had achieved its stated goal of developing the missiles listed in the program and the missiles inducted into the armed forces after being duly tested.

Akash Missile:

The Akash is a medium-range Surface to Air Missile. This means that it can be launched from the surface to take down aerial targets. The Akash can take down aircraft that is 30 Km away and at a ceiling height of 18Km.

The Missile is intended to be launched from static or mobile platforms such as battle tanks and wheeled trucks. Multiple objectives can be handled and manoeuvring targets can be destroyed, including unmanned aerial vehicles, fighter aircraft, cruise missiles and helicopter missiles.

The Akash Missile 1S is an upgraded version of the Akash.

The armed forces demanded a missile with a heat seeker that could target more accurately the inbound missile.

DRDO, then upgraded the previous Akash Missile with an indigenous seeker named it Akash-S1. This missile was fired five times and the tests were finished effectively.

Akash NG:

The DRDO is currently working on a next-generation Missile, Akash- NG.
The Missile will feature AESA Multi-Function Radar(MFR). Adding MFR will align the capacities of the Akash missile scheme it never had before.

MFR will merge three different radar tasks (search, track and re-control) in one unit. This fresh Akash NG will improve India’s air defence system in a significant way.

Akash Missile Strength & Deployments:

The Indian Air Force is equipped with 8 squadrons of Akash Missile and each squadron has 125 Missiles each. The 2 regiments of Indian Army are equipped with Akash Missile & each consists of 240 launchers and 625 Missiles.

The Indian Air Force has stationed Akash Missiles at its bases in Gwalior (Maharajpur AFS), Jalpaiguri (Hasimara AFS), Tezpur, Jorhat and Pune (Lohegaon AFS).

In June – July 2015, the Indian Army deploy an Akash Regiment, the second prepared by the end of 2016.

आकाश 1S: मध्यम दूरी की सतह से वायु में वार करने वाली मिसाइल

रक्षा अनुसंधान और विकास संगठन (DRDO) ने 27 मई  को स्वदेशी रूप से विकसित आकाश -1S वायु रक्षा मिसाइल प्रणाली की प्रभावशीलता का परीक्षण किया। आकाश मिसाइल को एकीकृत निर्देशित मिसाइल विकास कार्यक्रम (IGMD) के तहत विकसित किया गया है। 

एकीकृत मिसाइल विकास कार्यक्रम:

एकीकृत निर्देशित मिसाइल विकास कार्यक्रम विभिन्न प्रकार की निर्देशित मिसाइलों के निर्माण के उद्देश्य से रक्षा मंत्रालय के दायरे में आता है, जो भारत को एक उत्कृष्ट सैन्य शक्ति प्रदान करता है और साथ ही साथ वह पडोसी जिनके साथ सम्बंध अनुकूल नहीं हैं जैसे कि चीन और पाकिस्तान उनके लिए एक निवारक के रूप में भी काम करता है।

डॉ. ए.पी.जे अब्दुल कलाम, जो इसरो के साथ काम करते थे और सैटेलाइट लॉन्च व्हीकल, एस.एल.वी-3 के विकास में निकटता से शामिल थे, उन्‍हें 1980 में IGMD कार्यक्रम में शामिल किया गया था।
अपने प्रबन्ध के तहत निर्देशित मिसाइल विकास कार्यक्रम में भारत द्वारा प्राप्त सफलता के कारण, उन्हें ‘मिसाइल मैन ऑफ़ इंडिया’ के रूप में जाना जाने लगा।

कार्यक्रम 1980 में शुरू हुआ और 2008 में समाप्त हुआ, जब रक्षा अनुसंधान और विकास संगठन (DRDO) ने औपचारिक रूप से 8 जनवरी, 2008 को घोषणा की कि रणनीतिक रूप से एकीकृत निर्देशित मिसाइल कार्यक्रम में सूचीबद्ध मिसाइलों को विकसित करने के अपने घोषित लक्ष्य को प्राप्त किया और मिसाइलों को विधिवत परीक्षण के बाद सशस्त्र बलों को सौंप दिया गया।

यह मिसाइल IGMD कार्यक्रम की सबसे बड़ी उपलब्धियों में से एक है।

आकाश मिसाइल:

आकाश मिसाइल एक मध्यम श्रेणी की सतह से वायु की मिसाइल है।
इसका मतलब है कि इसे सतह से हवाई लक्ष्यों को मार गिराने के लिए लॉन्च किया जा सकता है।
आकाश मिसाइल 30 किलोमीटर दूर और 18 किलोमीटर की सीलिंग ऊंचाई पर स्थित विमान पर वार कर सकती है।

मिसाइल का उद्देश्य स्थिर या मोबाइल प्लेटफार्मों जैसे कि युद्धक टैंक और पहिएदार ट्रकों से लॉन्च किया जाना है।
मानव रहित हवाई वाहन, लड़ाकू विमान, क्रूज मिसाइल और हेलीकाप्टर मिसाइल सहित कई लक्ष्यों को संभाला जा सकता है और युद्धाभ्यास को नष्ट किया जा सकता है।

आकाश 1S मिसाइल आकाश मिसाइल का उन्नत संस्करण है।

सशस्त्र बलों ने ऊष्‍मा खोजी के साथ एक मिसाइल की मांग की जो इनबाउंड मिसाइल को अधिक सटीक रूप से लक्षित कर सके।
DRDO ने तब पिछली आकाश मिसाइल को एक स्वदेशी साधक के साथ अपग्रेड किया था जिसका नाम आकाश-S1 था।
इस मिसाइल को पांच बार दागा गया और परीक्षण प्रभावी ढंग से समाप्त हुए।

आकाश NG:

DRDO वर्तमान में एक अगली पीढ़ी के आकाश मिसाइल, आकाश- NG पर काम कर रहा है।

मिसाइल में AESA मल्टी-फंक्शन रडार (MFR) की सुविधा होगी।
एम.एफ.आर जोड़ने से आकाश मिसाइल योजना की क्षमता संरेखित होगी जो पहले कभी नहीं थी।
एम.एफ.आर एक इकाई में तीन अलग-अलग रडार कार्यों (खोज, ट्रैक और पुनः नियंत्रण) का विलय करेगा। यह फ्रेश आकाश NG एक सार्थक तरीके से भारत की वायु रक्षा प्रणाली में सुधार करेगा।

शक्ति और तैनाती:

भारतीय वायु सेना आकाश मिसाइल के 8 स्क्वाड्रन से सुसज्जित है और प्रत्येक स्क्वाड्रन में 125 मिसाइलें हैं।
भारतीय सेना की 2 रेजिमेंट आकाश मिसाइल से लैस हैं और प्रत्येक में 240 लांचर और 625 मिसाइल शामिल हैं।

वायु सेना ने आकाश मिसाइलों को ग्वालियर (महाराजपुर AFS), जलपाईगुड़ी (हसीमारा AFS), तेजपुर, जोरहाट और पुणे (लोहगाँव AFS) में तैनात किया है।
जून – जुलाई 2015 में, भारतीय सेना ने एक आकाश रेजिमेंट को तैनात किया, दूसरा 2016 के अंत तक तैयार किया गया।
