Codex Committee on Spices and Culinary Herbs

Inaugurating the fifth session of the Codex Committee on Spices and Culinary Herbs (CCSCH) established under Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC), Ms. Rita Teaotia, Chairperson, Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), described the risk of unscrupulous and intentional adulteration of spices through substitution due to their high economic value.

Freedom of Navigation Operations

The US Navy has publicly declared it conducted “freedom of navigation operations” in India’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) near Lakshadweep recently, without deliberately seeking India’s prior consent. The exercise was carried out to challenge India’s excessive maritime claims.

A recent study, commissioned by the United Nations Development Programme and The Coca-Cola Company has raised the issue of ambiguity about definitions of child labour and forced labour in India related laws, especially for sugarcane producing states of Karnataka, Maharashtra, Punjab, Bihar and Uttar Pradesh.

Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana – PMGKAY

Recently the Government of India has released the data related to Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PMGKAY). The Government of India has stated that 16 states / Union Territories have taken 100 percent food grains for May 2021 under PMGKAY. In addition, the Food Corporation of India has supplied 31.80 LMT free food grains to the States / Union Territories under PMGKAY.

Paediatric Inflammatory Multisystem Syndrome

According to a study by Lancet, the symptoms of a rare paediatric inflammatory multisystem syndrome(PIMS-TS) associated with SARS-CoV2 are resolved after six months. Paediatric inflammatory multisystem syndrome temporally associated with COVID-19 (PIMS-TS) is a type of presentation of SARS-CoV-2 infection that produces a 10 times greater need for hospitalisation and mortality in children than other COVID-19 presentations.
