A new engine was required by India to create a modern fighter jet that met international standards, hence listing two engines for Tejas: the GE F404 and Eurojet EJ200 engines.
GE F404 has been approved by DRDO for Tejas as compared to the Eurojet EJ200 engine.
Eurojet EJ200 Engine
- The Eurojet EJ200 has been developed by the Munich-headquartered Eurojet Turbo GmbH. This engine is fitted in the Eurofighter Typhoon multi-role fighter jet. It is largely based on the Rolls Royce XG-40 technology that was developed in the 1980s.
- According to Rolls Royce, the EJ200 fighter jet engine offers an unprecedented power-to-weight race, despite being smaller than its contemporary engines.
GE F404 Engines
- With GE F404 engines, Tejas of India will get engines that are much more reliable. It is important to note that presently Chengdu J-20 stealth fighter jet of China is facing engine problems.
- The GE F404 is one of the most versatile engines of its class, making it a reliable option for a variety of applications worldwide. Currently, GE F404 engines such as Boeing T-7 Red Hawk Advanced Jet Trainer, South Korean KAI T-50 Golden Eagle Light Combat Aircraft, Northrop F-20 Tigershark, Lockheed Martin F-117 Nighthawk and McDonnell Douglas Fog F / A-18 Hornet Fighter are on jets. With the experience of powering such modern aircraft, there is no doubt that the GE F404 engine is true of very high capacity and meets all international standards.
- Earlier, the GE F404 engine has been praised by former Air Force Chief Marshal Birendra Singh Dhanoa.
Regarding the Development of Tejas fighter Aircraft
- The HAL Tejas Fighter is considered a major project under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Make in India’ initiative.
- It is an ‘Indigenous Light Combat Aircraft’, jointly developed by ‘Aeronautical Development Agency- ADA’ and ‘Hindustan Aeronautics Limited- HAL’. is.
- It is ‘a multi-role tactical fighter aircraft with the smallest single-weight single engine’ (Multirole Tactical Fighter Aircraft).
- Significantly, it has been designed with the objective of reducing its dependence on Russia’s MIG-21 fighter jets and moving towards self-reliance in the field of national security through indigenous warfare.
- Earlier, ‘Kaveri engines’ were installed in it. It is noteworthy that GTRE (Gas Turbine Research Establishment) was entrusted with the design and development of the Kaveri engine. It is important to note that the Kaveri engine is a low bypass twin-spool turbofan engine of 80 by NR thrust class. However, it was considered inadequate for the requirements of the Tejas fighter jet.
- Gas Turbine Research Establishment (GTRE) is a leading research and development organization under the Ministry of Defense, Government of India. The main character of this establishment is to design and develop gas turbine engines for military applications and to carry out advanced research works in the field of gas turbine subsystems.

भारत द्वारा एक आधुनिक फाइटर जेट बनाने एक नये इंजन की आवश्यकता थी जो कि अंतर्राष्ट्रीय मानकों पर खरा उतरे, इसीलिए तेजस के लिए दो इंजनों को सूचीबद्ध किया गया : यूरोजेट EJ200 इंजन और जनरल इलेक्ट्रिक का GE F404 इंजन।
DRDO द्वारा यूरोजेट EJ200 इंजन की तुलना में तेजस हेतु जीई F404 को स्वीकृति प्रदान की गयी है।
क्या है यूरोजेट EJ200 इंजन ?
- यूरोजेट EJ200 को म्यूनिख-मुख्यालय वाले यूरोजेट टर्बो जीएमबीएच द्वारा विकसित किया गया है। यह इंजन यूरोफाइटर टाइफून मल्टी-रोल फाइटर जेट मे लगा है। यह काफी हद तक रोल्स रॉयस XG-40 प्रौद्योगिकी पर आधारित है जिसे 1980 के दशक में विकसित किया गया था।
- रोल्स रॉयस के अनुसार, EJ200 फाइटर जेट इंजन अपने समकालीन इंजनों की तुलना में छोटा होने के बावजूद, यह एक अभूतपूर्व पावर-टू-वेट रेसियों प्रदान करता है।
क्या है जीई F404 इंजन ?
- जीई F404 इंजनों के साथ, भारत के तेजस को ऐसे इंजन मिलेंगे, जो बहुत अधिक विश्वसनीय है। ध्यातव्य है कि वर्तमान मे चीन के चेंगदू जे -20 स्टील्थ फाइटर जेट मे इंजन की समस्या आ रही है।
- जीई F404 अपने वर्ग के सबसे बहुमुखी इंजनों में से एक है, जो इसे दुनिया भर विभिन्न अनुप्रयोगों के लिए एक विश्वसनीय विकल्प बनाता है। वर्तमान मे जीई F404 इंजन बोइंग टी -7 रेड हॉक एडवांस जेट ट्रेनर, दक्षिण कोरियाई केएआई टी -50 गोल्डन ईगल लाइट कॉम्बैट एयरक्राफ्ट, नॉर्थ्रोप एफ -20 टाइगशार्क, लॉकहीड मार्टिन एफ -117 नाइटहॉक और मैकडॉनेल डगलस फॉग एफ़ / ए -18 हॉर्नेट जैसे फाइटर जेट्स पर लगा हुआ है। ऐसे आधुनिक विमानों को शक्ति प्रदान करने के अनुभव के साथ, इसमें कोई संदेह नहीं है कि जीई F404 इंजन वास्तव में बहुत उच्च क्षमता वाले है और सभी अंतरराष्ट्रीय मानकों को पूरा करते है।

जानिये तेजस लड़ाकू विमान के बारे में
- एचएएल तेजस फाइटर के विकास को प्रधान मंत्री नरेंद्र मोदी की ‘मेक इन इंडिया’ पहल के तहत एक प्रमुख परियोजना माना जाता है।
- यह एक ‘स्वदेशी हल्का लड़ाकू विमान’ है, जिसे ‘विमान विकास एजेंसी’ तथा ‘हिंदुस्तान एयरोनॉटिक्स लिमिटेड’ के द्वारा संयुक्त रूप से विकसित किया गया है।
- यह सबसे छोटे-हल्के वज़न का एकल इंजन युक्त ‘बहु-भूमिका निभाने वाला एक सामरिक लड़ाकू विमान’ है।
- गौरतलब है कि इसे रूस के MIG-21 लड़ाकू विमानों पर अपनी निर्भरता को कम करने तथा स्वदेशी युद्ध संबंधी के माध्यम से राष्ट्रीय सुरक्षा के क्षेत्र में आत्मनिर्भर होने की ओर बढ़ने के उद्देश्य से तैयार किया गया है।
- पहले इसमे ‘कावेरी इंजन’ लगाए गए थे। ध्यातव्य है कि जीटीआरई (गैस टरवाईन अनुसंधान स्थापना) को कावेरी इंजन के डिजाइन और विकास कि ज़िम्मेदारी सौपी गयी थी । ध्यातव्य है कि कावेरी इंजन 80 बाई एनआर थ्रस्ट क्लास का लो बाईपास ट्विन स्पूल टर्बो फैन इंजन है। हालाँकि, इसे तेजस फाइटर जेट की आवश्यकताओं के लिए अपर्याप्त माना गया था।
- गैस टरबाइन अनुसंधान स्थापना (जी टी आर ई) रक्षा मंत्रालय, भारत सरकार के अधीन एक अग्रणी अनुसंधान तथा विकास संगठन है। इस स्थापना का मुख्य चार्टर सैन्य अनुप्रयोगों के लिए गैस टरबाइन इंजनों का अभिकल्पन तथा विकास एवं गैस टरबाइन उप-प्रणालियों के क्षेत्र में उन्नत अनुसंधान कार्यों को करना है।
