PM eVidya was announced as an Indian Initiative for Digital Education on May 17, 2020, which aims to unify all efforts related to digital, online, and on-air education, and it includes:

  • DIKSHA portal will become the nation’s digital infrastructure for providing quality e-content in school education for all the States and Union Territories.
  • TV a dedicated channel for classes 1 to 12 will provide access to quality educational material.
  • It will benefit nearly 25 crore school-going children.
Indian Initiatives for Digital Education

DIKSHA (Digital Infrastructure for Knowledge Sharing): e-Learning 

  • It is the ‘one nation; one digital platform’ for school education in India launched in 2017 available for schools in all states
  • available for grades from 1 to 12.
  • can be accessed through mobile application and web portal.

VidyaDaan Digital Education

It is a content contribution program at the national level, that makes use of the DIKSHA platform and tools, it allows donation or contribution of e-learning resources for school education by experts, private bodies, and educational bodies.

E-textbooks

  • e-Pathshala mobile app (Android, iOS, Windows), and web portal can be used to access e-textbooks.
  • audio and video content of NCERT are available in different languages – English, Sanskrit, Urdu, Hindi.

Radio Broadcasting

  • Shiksha Vani is a Podcast of the Central Board for Secondary Education (CBSE) used by learners of grades 12 to 9.
  • It contains more than 430 pieces of audio content for all subjects from grade 12 to 1.

Other Government Initiatives for Smooth Conduct of E-Learning

  • E-PG Pathshala: An initiative of the Ministry of Human Resource Development to provide e-content for studies.
  • SWAYAM: it provides for an integrated platform for online courses.
  • NEAT: It aims to use Artificial Intelligence to make learning more personalized and customized as per the requirements of the learner
  • Other initiatives include: National Project on Technology Enhanced Learning (NPTEL), National Knowledge Network, (NKN), and National Academic Depository (NAD), among others.
  • PRAGYATA: The Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) released guidelines on digital education titled PRAGYATA.
  • Under the PRAGYATA guidelines, only 30 minutes of screen time per day for interacting with parents is recommended for kindergarten, nursery and pre-school.
  • Schools can hold live online classes for a maximum of 1.5 hours per day for Classes 1-8, and 3 hours per day for Classes 9-12.

  • This initiative has made students gain practical knowledge
  •  With digital learning, a student can engage in online classes or learning anywhere, at any time
  • Through digital education, learning can be made more engaging and interactive between the students and teachers

Challenges with Digital Education in India

  • Availability of internet connection to all is one of the biggest requirements for digital education.
  • Providing the devices and technology to socio-economically weak sections.
  • Training teachers is another challenge.
  • Making digital cost-effective.
  • To ensure that Government schools and colleges are provided with proper facilities for digital classrooms
