National Teachers Day is observed every year on 5th September in India to commemorate the birthday of the country’s first Vice President and second President Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan.
To celebrate this day, various programmes were organised in schools and colleges throughout the country to honour teachers who shaped the lives of students and showed them the path to success.
On this occasion, Environment Ministry launched Prakarti khoj, an environmental awareness initiative. It is an online environmental quiz competition conducted at the national level. The objective of the quiz was to generate interest among school children in science related to the environment.
About Dr. Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan
Teachers’ Day is celebrated on 5th September every year throughout India in memory of Dr Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan on his birth anniversary. Radhakrishnan was born in a family in Tiruttani (Tamil Nadu) in 1888. He has played many roles in his life. He has been a teacher, philosopher, author and politician. He was the first Vice President of India (1952–1962) and the second President of India from 1962 to 1967. He was awarded a knighthood in 1931. In 1954, he was awarded Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian award in India. He got honorary membership of the British Royal Order of Merit in 1963.

Note: He was the first recipient of Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award along with politician C. Rajagopalachari, scientist C. V. Raman.
World Teachers Day
World Teachers’ Day is celebrated on 5th October annually to commemorate the anniversary of the adoption of the 1966 ILO/UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers. This instrument sets forth the rights and responsibilities of teachers, and standards for their initial preparation and further education, recruitment, employment, teaching and learning conditions.
Shikshak Parv
The Ministry of Education has organised this year’s ‘Shikshak Parv’ from September 5 to 17,2021. The event will be addressed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi online on September 7.
A dedicated site https://www.education.gov.in/shikshakparv/ was launched by the National Informatics Centre (NIC), under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology. It will start at 11 am on September 7 with the presence of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.
The 10-day-long programme will include seminars and presentations on the National Education Policy 2020. It will be streamed online on all the social media platforms, starting from Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube channels of the Education Ministry. The day will also award 44 teachers who will be awarded the National Teachers Award 2021, conferred by President Ramnath Kovind.
History
Teacher’s Day was first established when Dr. RadhaKrishnan was made the second President of India in 1962 when his students approached him and wanted to celebrate this special day.
But then, Dr. Radhakrishnan requested them to mark this day to recognise the contribution and efforts of teachers in our society.
Significance
Teacher’s Day is celebrated across every educational institution in India, starting with schools, colleges, and universities.
Usually, students arrange cultural fests like performances, dance, and shows that their teachers love. But this year, due to the pandemic situation, the schools are shut, so virtual wishes and greetings might compensate.
Importance
This day is an important event for both teachers’ and students’ lives. They equally look forward to this day. This day makes the students understand the importance of teachers in their lives and they honour them with celebration and little presents from their side.
