Swami Vivekananda’s pre-monastic name was Narendra Nath Dutta. He was born on January 12, 1863, in Kolkata (formerly Calcutta), and he died there on July 4, 1902. His father’s name was Vishwanath Dutta, and his mother’s name was Bhuvaneshwari Devi. He was raised in a prosperous family. His father’s sudden death while he was a young lad, which shattered the family’s financial base, caused him to fall into poverty. Despite having a strong academic background, he had a protracted period of difficulty finding work. He used to knock on doors and request employment, but because he was unsuccessful, he lost faith in God.
One of his English teachers gave him the name “Shri Ramkrishna Paramhamsa,” and in 1881 he encountered Shri Ramakrishna Paramhamsa in the Kali temple in Dakshineshwar, where he later converted to his faith. He brought the Indian philosophical traditions of Vedanta and Yoga to the West. He is admired for his contributions to national values and was a fiercely loyal citizen of India.
He also highlighted how widespread poverty is in India and how it must be addressed properly if the nation is to prosper. He is well remembered for his address at the Parliament of the World’s Religions in Chicago in 1893, where he described India’s culture, its significance, Hinduism, etc. before opening with the phrase “Sisters and brothers of America.”
As a result, Swami Vivekananda is a wise and devout man, a genuine philosopher whose ideas inspired young people and laid the road for the advancement of the nation. So this explains why India joyfully and enthusiastically observes January 12 as National Youth Day each year.
