The history of Uttar Pradesh is very much associated with the broad history of India. It dates back to 4000 years. Formerly the area of Uttar Pradesh was occupied by Aryans or the Dasas and their main occupation was agriculture. The Aryans through conquests occupied the adjoining areas. The state was the heart of the Mahabharata war.

They laid the foundations of its civilization in the region. It was during the days of the Aryans’ inhabitation in the region that epics of Mahabharata, Ramayana, Brahmanas, and Puranas were composed.

Uttar Pradesh was known as ‘Madhya Desh’ in ancient times, its history is closely related to the history of north India because Uttar Pradesh has been the fertile part between Delhi and Patna and it has also been a route of the invaders coming from the north-west.
Although, there is little information about its pre-historic period. The instruments and weapons, recuperated from the excavations at Mirzapur and Bundelkhand regions are belonging to the old and incipient stone period. Articles of the Harrapan period found in excavations at Alamgir in Meerut district remind us of the very distant past of this province.

PALEOLITHIC PERIOD

Acheulean sites have been found in chhatarpalia, Mahugarh and Parisdhia in the Belan Valley, Singrauli basin in Sonbhadra and Chakia in Chaundauli. The excavation of Belan Valley has been done in the direction of Prof. G.R. Sharma of the University of Allahabad. At Lohadanala place in Belan Valley, a bone made Mother Goddess sculpture and stone instruments had been found. Apart from these extremely rich sites of Lalitpur and two sites at Nihi and Gopipur on the banks of small rivulets in Banda were also found.

MESOLITHIC PERIOD

The evidence of the Mesolithic culture has been found in Morhana, Bargrikhor, LokhaniyaPhulpur, Korawon, Bara in Allahabad; Sarainahar, Mahdaha, Dumdama in Pratapgarh. Microlithic hunter-gatherers were responsible for the initial settlement of Sarai Nahar Rai in 10,350-9550 B.C. 15 burials have been found in Sarai Nahar Rai. Excavation at Mahagara near Meza and in the Belan and Son valleys uncovered village with circular, mud-coated bamboo structures where hunting-gathering was combined with the use of domesticated cattle and a few sheep or goats and plants.

मेसोलिथिक संस्कृति के प्रमाण इलाहाबाद में मोरना, बरगिरखोर, लोचनियापुलपुर, कोरवोन, बारा में पाए गए हैं; प्रतापगढ़ में सरैनाहर, महदहा, दमदमा। 10,350-95 ई.पू. में सराय नाहर राय की प्रारंभिक बसावट के लिए माइक्रोलिथिक शिकारी एकत्रित थे। सराय नाहर राय में 15 दफ़नियाँ मिली हैं। मेजा के निकट महागारा में खुदाई और बेलन और सोन घाटियों में परिपत्र, मिट्टी से ढंकी बांस की संरचनाओं के साथ खुला गांव जहां शिकार-सभा को पालतू मवेशियों और कुछ भेड़ या बकरियों और पौधों के उपयोग के साथ जोड़ा गया था।

NEOLITHIC PERIOD

In Uttar Pradesh the evidence of the Neolithic Culture has been found in Koldihwa, Mehgara and Panchoh in Belan Valley, Allahabad, Mirzapur-Sonbhadra and Pratapgarh etc. The stone instruments of these periods were much sharp, small and beautiful than that of the Mesolithic period. One of the earliest Neolithic sites in India is Lahuradewa in the Middle Ganges reign provide indications of slash and burn cultivation techniques. The appearance of copper arrowhead and fishing hook, dish-on-stand, barley, wheat and pulses, an abundant number of state and other beads, spouted and pedestal vessels, a few painted potsherds, improvement in ceramic industries, etc., provide new evidence to apprehend what was happening in the cultural advancement in this part of the country.
The ancient sit of Lahuradewa continued to be inhabited during the NBPW and subsequent periods up to the early centuries AD.
