Vallabhbhai Jhaverbhai Patel, commonly known as Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, was an Indian lawyer, influential political leader, barrister, and statesman who served as the first Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister of India from 1947 to 1950.

Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel dubbed the “Iron Man of India”, was one of the most prominent figures in India’s fight for independence.
His role in uniting 565 princely nations into a newly independent India will be remembered for a long time. Patel became a member of Gandhi’s Non-Cooperation Movement (1920).
He had organised the peasants of Gujarat’s Kheda, Borsad, and Bardoli in a nonviolent civil disobedience movement against the British Raj’s repressive policies. He was given the title of “Sardar” after the Bardoli Satyagraha in 1928. Patel was a selfless leader who put the country’s interests above all else and worked tirelessly to determine India’s destiny.

Life Events and Contributions of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel

A. Before Independence:

  1. He gathered the peasants of Gujarat’s Kheda, Borsad, and Bardoli in a nonviolent civil disobedience movement against the British Raj’s repressive policies.
  2. He presided over the Karachi session of the Congress in 1931. The resolution on fundamental rights and civil freedoms, as well as minimum salaries for workers and the removal of untouchability, were all discussed during this session.
  3. In Gujarat and elsewhere, he campaigned against alcohol consumption, untouchability, caste prejudice, and women’s emancipation.

After Independence:

  1. He was the first Deputy Prime Minister of India. Patel was appointed India’s Home Minister on the country’s first anniversary of independence.
  2. He fought to restore peace and organised humanitarian initiatives for refugees fleeing Punjab and Delhi.
  3. His vision and skillful handling of the most tumultuous time of post-independence history, as well as the fortitude he exhibited in integrating the different princely states into India, are unrivalled in contemporary history.
  4. Sardar Patel joined the princely kingdoms in British Indian territory, preventing India’s balkanization.
  5. He promised to construct the temple of Somnath. The temple of Somnath had been demolished and rebuilt countless times before. He believed that the story of its rebirth from ruins at this time would be indicative of India’s resurgence.
  6. Patel led Gujarat’s cooperative movements and assisted in the formation of the Kaira District Cooperative Milk Producers’ Union, which was a game-changer for dairy products across the country.
  7. His contribution to the modern-day IAS institution, which replaced the British-era Indian Civil Services (ICS), goes far beyond that historic lecture.

Current Relevance

Patel deserves a big share of the credit for India’s thriving cooperative sector today. His idea for uplifting local communities, particularly women, can be traced back to the founding of the legendary dairy cooperative Amul (Anand Milk Producers Union Ltd.). He also popularized the concept of cooperative housing societies, which provide dignity and shelter to a large number of people. India became a surplus milk-producing country after the White Revolution.
