The Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030 was adopted by the UN Member States on 18 March 2015 at the Third UN World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction in Sendai City, Japan. The Sendai Framework is one of the major agreements of the post-2015 development agenda

It aims to achieve the substantial reduction of disaster risk and losses in lives, livelihoods, and health and in the economic, physical, social, cultural, and environmental assets of persons, businesses, communities, and countries over the next 15 years.

The Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030 outlines seven clear targets and four priorities for action.

Sendai Framework Seven Targets to be achieved by 2030

Four of the seven Targets are related to the reduction in losses

  1. Substantial reduction of global disaster mortality
  2. Substantial reduction in the number of affected people globally
  3. Reduction of direct disaster economic loss in relation to the global gross domestic product (GDP)
  4. Substantial reduction of disaster damage to critical infrastructure and disruption of basic services, among them health and educational facilities, including through developing their resilience

Three of the seven Targets are related to the improvement of capacities

  1. Increase in the number of countries with national and local disaster risk reduction strategies
  2. Greater international cooperation to developing countries by way of adequate and sustainable support to complement their national actions for implementation of this framework
  3. Increased access to multi-hazard early warning systems and disaster risk information and assessments to people

Four priorities for action

Four priorities for action to prevent new and reduce existing disaster risks:

  1. Understanding disaster risk;
  2. Strengthening disaster risk governance;
  3. Increase investing in disaster reduction for resilience;
  4. Improving disaster preparedness for effective response, and to “Build Back Better” in recovery, rehabilitation and reconstruction.

The Sendai Framework reflects the Sustainable Development Goals adopted by the UN in 2015. Ten of 17 SDG goals include targets related to Disaster Risk Management (DRM). They are mentioned in the below image:
