Varuna 2023 INDIA FRANCE BILATERAL NAVAL EXERCISE

Varuna 2023: On the Western Seaboard, the 21st iteration of the India-France bilateral naval exercise Varuna got underway on January 16. Although the two navies’ joint exercise began in 1993, it was given the name “VARUNA” in 2001 and has since grown to represent the two countries’ strategic bilateral cooperation.

Varuna 2023: Important Points

The 1993-founded bilateral exercise was renamed “Varuna” in 2001 and has since established itself as a distinctive feature of the strategic bilateral cooperation between France and India.
The indigenous guided missile stealth destroyer INS Chennai, the guided missile frigate INS Teg, the P-8I and Dornier maritime patrol aircraft, integrated helicopters, and the MiG29K fighter aircraft will also participate in this phase of the exercise for the Indian Navy.
The French Navy will be represented by the aircraft carrier Charles De Gaulle, the frigates FS Forbin and Provence, the support ship FS Marne, and the maritime patrol aircraft Atlantique.

Significance of Varuna Exercise

From January 16 to January 20, 2023, there will be a five-day exercise that consists of advanced air defence drills, tactical manoeuvres, surface firings, underway replenishment, and other maritime activities.
Exercise Varuna increases communication and collaboration between the two navies while also strengthening the strategic relationship between France and India. It provides an opportunity for both countries to demonstrate their commitment to preserving regional stability, security, and peace.
The exercise also offers the Indian Navy the chance to improve its marine skills and take advantage of the sophisticated tools and technology employed by the French Navy.
