  • The Economist Intelligence Unit-EIU has released an index report on the Asia-Pacific Personal Healthcare Index.
  • This report has been prepared based on the efficiency of the countries on 27 different indicators, dividing these 27 indicators into the following four groups –
  1. Policy Approach
  2. Health Information
  3. Technology Inclusion
  4. Health Services of

Asia-Pacific Personalized Health Index and India’s position in it

  • In Health Information Indicator, India ranked 10th with a score of 41 points. This indicator takes into account the data, infrastructure, and technical expertise required to obtain personalized healthcare.
  • India ranks last with 24 points in health services indicators. This indicator includes access to services needed for personal health, plans related to it, and the organizational structure to implement them.
  • India ranks 9th in terms of technology inclusion. This indicator includes the equipment, applications, platforms and compensation structures required for personal healthcare.
  • India’s ranking is 5th in terms of policy approach. This indicator includes the policy framework, partnership, individuals involved in personal health facilities, etc.

What are the reasons for India’s low ranking? 

  • It is attributed to substantial progress in India’s access to health services, albeit inequalities between urban and rural areas.
  • The availability of personal health services in India is mostly limited to industrial and urban areas. In addition, key factors preventing growth in access to health services are cost containment from the main soup.
  • However, India is working as planned to ensure access to personalized healthcare. Several policy initiatives and nationwide projects focused on building capacities in personal healthcare have been launched with Ayushman Bharat’s plan.
  • In India’s health sector – urban-rural disparities, limited access to health care, lack of digital infrastructure, and inadequate health literacy level are significant challenges.
  • India’s highly federal nature has also been seen in this report as one of the reasons for restricting access to health services.
